The Dubrovnik Archaeology Tour

This well-researched and carefully designed educational tour, Indiana Jones' style, offers you the opportunity to travel with a "time machine" through the history of the ancient Republic of Dubrovnik. In this exclusive tour I'm going to offer my knowledge in the historical and archaeological field for everyone who wants to know about military architecture, metallurgy, weaponry, trade and church history in medieval and post–medieval Dubrovnik.

Together, we will explore the interior of Minčeta fortress, as well as a hidden gem – an underground archaeological site of a 16th century foundry. Our archaeological adventure will continue on a spectacular walkway along the city walls. Also, this discovery tour will give us an opportunity to explore the interior of Bokar fortress. Our interpretative walk will finish with a visit to the medieval archaeological site of Benedictine nunneries and underground granaries.

Tour Deep Dive

The meeting point of this two-hour tour is in front of the City Guard building, right next to the Bell Tower. We will head from Zlatarska street (which is the street with the least stairs in the City) and take an easy few minutes walk to Peline street which will bring us to the bottom of Minčeta fortress. By entering this fortress, we will step back to the Middle Ages and explore the hallways with the casemates. There, you will learn about the beginnings of the use of firearms in Dubrovnik.

We continue the tour by taking the walkway alongside the city walls. There you will have plenty of photo opportunities for a different and unique perspective of Dubrovnik. Our next stop is a visit to Gornji Ugao tower. There we will go beneath Dubrovnik's skin, so to speak, to discover a spectacular underground archaeological site of a 16th century foundry. This archaeological site (of a surface area of approximately 600 sqm) is located beneath a basketball court and is a true industrial miracle. During our visit to this archaeological jewel, we will find out curiosities about metallurgy, the water supply system and international trade in the Republic of Dubrovnik.

Next, we will take the walkway and learn more about Dubrovnik’s impressive military architecture. I will then give a lecture on the production and use of cold weapons, war/military equipment and siege devices in medieval Dubrovnik.

Our next stop is the fortress Bokar. After a tour of the interior of this 16th century artillery fortress, we will climb to its top where we will hear interesting details and stories on the manufacture and use of firearms in the Republic of Dubrovnik from the end of the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century.

Our final stop is the medieval archaeological site of Benedictine nunneries and underground granaries. By strolling around this archaeological site (of a surface area of approximately 2.000 sqm) we will step back in time and picture ourselves in a romantic setting of the Middle Ages and learn interesting facts on church history, urbanization and stockpiling of grain in the Republic of Dubrovnik.

My commentaries during the tour will be accompanied by A3 sized expert drawn illustrations (reconstructions).
